We hope that you are enjoying the summer season and making the most of the warm weather and outdoors. This is what has been going on with the community.

COVID-19

The World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 no longer a pandemic on May 5, 2023 and most of the countries did away with mandatary Public Health protocols. However, people are still getting COVID and people are still dying. Several variants are still around and a new Omicron variants EG.5 has surfaced. While the Public Health Agency of Canada is reporting low COVID-19 levels countrywide, in the first week in August 2023, 1 in 5 cases was attributed to EG.5. Cases of EG.5 are expected to increase in the Fall.

Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Toronto, states that vaccines used regardless of the manufacturer and COVID variant, continue to provide significant protection against severe manifestations of the virus. Prevention is the same. EG.5 like its parent Omicron appears to spread more easily than its predecessors.

The medical profession is encouraging everyone to voluntarily take precautions
  • Wear masks in crowded indoor spaces
  • Get booster vaccines, especially the elderly and those with underlying medical conditions.
  • Look for ways to improve indoor air quality.
  • Wash your hands when returning to indoors

Spring Golf
Twenty-four players came out to join our Spring Golf day on June 8 at Granite Ridge. Afterwards, everyone gathered in the dining room on an extra long table and enjoyed the special burgers Chef Jimmy created for the golfers. It was great to see everyone, to renew old friendships and catch up.

September 2023 Golf

Unfortunately September Golf has been cancelled due to lack of registrations.

Family Picnic
Family picnic returned after 3 years of absence due to COVID-19 on June 25, 2023. Only 25 members of the CCASA community attended which was disappointing. All were over 50 and no children present! So, no fun games were held. Turn out during pre-COVID were 80-90 people. It was great to see all the seniors who showed up and the 3 representatives from the Toronto Hakka Alliance bringing total attendance to 28.

As CCASA funds are low, Share the Wealth fundraiser was held. The lucky winner was Eleen Ford. Congrats to Eileen who won half the cash. Thanks to all who contributed to the fundraiser.

Picnic photos can be viewed on the CCASA website
